Petition Types and Steps

You have withdrawn from all of your courses BEFORE the university withdrawal/drop deadline OR you withdrew from ALL of your courses in a prior semester, BEFORE the university withdrawal/drop deadline and would like to petition for the withdrawal to be classified as medical. Please note that this deadline is different from add/drop week. For more information, please visit the university catalog.

  1. Withdraw from all courses by the listed University Withdrawal Deadline for the semester.
  2. Submit the Medical Petition via Medical Petition Portal.
  3. When the petition has been submitted via the Medical Petition Portal, its contents will be evaluated for completion and then scheduled for review by the Medical Petition Committee OR returned to the student for corrections.
  4. Check the Medical Petition Portal for status progress and decision information.
  5. If a petition has been approved and processed by the University Registrar, the University Bursar will be notified to process tuition or fees repayment for which you may be eligible. Note that the eligibility of repayment is dependent on many factors and is determined by your funding source. There are several factors that may impact a student’s potential for repayment. It is best to discuss the possibility of repayment for an approved medical petition with a representative from the University Bursar’s Office.
Medical Drop by Deadline

You have dropped one or several (BUT NOT ALL) of your courses before the university withdrawal/drop deadline OR you dropped one or several (BUT NOT ALL) of your courses in a prior semester, before the university withdrawal/drop deadline and would like to petition for the drop(s) to be classified as medical. Please note that this deadline is different from add/drop week. For more information, please visit the university catalog.

  1. Drop one or several courses (but not all courses) by the listed University Withdrawal Deadline for the semester.
  2. Submit the Medical Petition via Medical Petition Portal.
  3. When the petition has been submitted via the Medical Petition Portal, its contents will be evaluated for completion and then scheduled for review by the Medical Petition Committee OR returned to the student for corrections.
  4. Check the Medical Petition Portal for status progress and decision information.
  5. If a petition has been approved and processed by the University Registrar, the University Bursar will be notified to process tuition or fees repayment for which you may be eligible. You would like to petition to the withdrawal from ALL of your courses in a prior semester, AFTER the university withdrawal/drop deadline of that semester. Please note that this deadline is different from add/drop week. For more information, please visit the university catalog.

  1. Students should meet with their academic advisor or graduate coordinator to inform them of their intentions to drop or withdraw retroactively. International students should also consult with their International Student Advisor.
  2. Submit the Medical Petition via Medical Petition Portal.
  3. When the petition has been submitted via the Medical Petition Portal, its contents will be evaluated for completion and then scheduled for review by the Medical Petition Committee OR returned to the student for corrections.
  4. Check the Medical Petition Portal for status progress and decision information.
